The Darkhours - Episode LXX: The Seeds of all things Dark

Taken from the blog description:

Disclaimer: The Darkhours is an internet radio show. It features Gothic, New Wave, Dark Wave, industrial, Metal, Goth Metal, Punk, O.D.O.R. and other alternative music genres. The views and opinions expressed by DJ Darkstar and the Darkhours do not reflect those of KMRL Mojoradiolive or it's staff.

Modern music is funny. It's had so many transgressions over the decades and yet... in the end, you have to remember the beginnings.Dark music isn't about just Goth, Metal, Industrial, Darkwave and New Wave. It's not about Euro metal, Symphonic metal, Epica or any of that stuff. It's about a feeling. It's about the music that gave us chills in our spines when we were kids even if they were songs passed down from generations before us. Before there were genres and cliques and subcultures and stuff like that. Back when Rock and Roll was called "The Devils Music".

I find it odd how to try and scare us, to instill that feeling of fear or darkness or whatever made you feel like you were a night creature, bands today have even turned to classical orchestration, operatic voices and choirs and more and more somber or horrific lyrics. Yet none of this is new. It's been done time and time again.because it's part of our inherent nature to chase after what we fear, to seek out the macabre, to stare the unknown in the face and to watch the plights of others as we pass by a simple car accident.

We're morbid beings by nature. The only difference with the typical Darkhours listener is that we celebrate it. Sometimes we even laugh in the face of it.

Join me tonight for the a sonic seance where we raise our musical awareness about how the darkness in music we all know and love got started. During this, we'll also inject new sounds along with the old and the familiar. Just expect to come and have a good time.. Can ya do that?

This episode featured songs from modern symphonic and goth metal bands such as E Nomine, Kamelot, Epica mixed with the seeds of Dark rock from bands like the Doors, The Moody Blues and even more dark tunesmiths from our eras past.

It was warped...come by and see what you missed. It was just bloody bizarre.

I’m too into the underdogs to become a drone to see the Dark Knight on opening weekend. Fuck that! There are far too many good 4 star movies to see that I can wait til the hooplah for this “5 star one” is gone as it eats up theaters for other good movies to be in. Does this give you a hint as to my ranting mood tonight? Oh yea….rare form tonight. Overworked and overtired means over RIPE for talking about the bizarre while we eat movie butter popcorn and listen to cool endarkened tunes. Be there… you won’t regret it.

In actuality, this was a very twisted show. The music started the first hour hot, hard and heavy with songs by Atomic Opera, Otep, Skindred, Hot Action Cop and more. By the second half of the show, it softened partly with songs by Sarah McLachlan, Kristen Hersh, Ofra Haza, , Julian Cope, Kon Kan, Erasure and Yaz and more. Near the end it got plain silly with humorous songs from Tai Mai Shu, Weird Al, Kelly, Rappy McRapperson and more! It was a very bizarre night all around.

Talk topics included the Samsung instinct vs. the iPhone, celphoneporn, goths and metalheads are geeks at heart and NYU students discussing "I kissed a girl and I liked it".)

Disclaimer: The Darkhours is an internet radio show. It features Gothic, New Wave, Dark Wave, industrial, Metal, Goth Metal, Punk, O.D.O.R. and other alternative music genres. The views and opinions expressed by DJ Darkstar and the Darkhours do not reflect those of KMRL Mojoradiolive or it’s staff.

It’s thundering here around the Darkhours Studios. Although it may not be wherever in the world you are, we at the Darkhours are going to attempt to bring you into the storm with us. The usual fun, frolic and ranting is due plus cool tunes abound from many reaches of the underworld. The fun grows exponentially here and the tune’s are always bizarre and rockin’. There’s no better, odder Wednesday night banter than the Darkhours with DJ Darkstar every Wednesday night from 10pm EST to Midnight!

The Darkhours Episode LVII: My Bloody Valentine Volume II

I pondered again this year for awhile about what this show should be about besides it’s usual dark debauchery… And then I was reminded that Valentine’s Day is TOMORROW!! So just how would the Darkhours celebrate “love day”? Why with darkness, lust, kink and anything one’s black heart desires, or course! Consider this the Anti-Valentines show.

This will be our day of swine and black roses. Remember, there are always uses for those thorns. Exactly how this will play out is always a mystery even to me, but you have to admit, we’ve been having fun, right?

Do NOT expect this to be a show full of nothing but cheesy love songs. If anything, we only play the SEXIEST songs of darkness.

The Darkhours - Episode LV: The Great Experiment

Experimenting into the future of the Darkhours…

For Darkhours LV… tonight we went the route of the roots of DJ Darkstar. If you knew it or not, Darkstar was a street DJ, a club DJ and a mixmaster. He remixed songs the old fashioned way before mixing songs via computer changed the the term from “remix” to “mash-up”. Now he tried his hand at live mp3 mixing/mashing starting tonight with micro mix blocks.

Block mix I featured artists like Depeche Mode, New Order, Cyndi Lauper, Erasure, Kraftwerk, George Kranz and INXS.

Block mix II: gave us Assemblage 23, Rednex, O Zone, Eiffel 65, Drowning Pool... yes... I said "Drowning Pool" and And One.

Block mix III threw us Apoptygma Bezerk, Beborn Beton, Pop Will Eat Itself, Die Krupps, New Order, Depeche Mode, Apotheosis mixed with Apoptygma Bezerk.

Block mix IV wrought the Killers, She Wants Revenge, and London After Midnight.

Sit back and download some really bizarre experimentation…intermixed with 2008 rants and raucousness…. exclusively on KMRL

The Darkhours - Episode LIV: The First KMRL LIVE show of 2008???

Even thought I left about 7000 songs in a portable hard drive upstate…
Even though I rang in the New year covered in allergic hives from head to toe and stayed in sick.
Even though I got up at an ungodly hour today to go to a meeting.
Even thought the New Year is already trying to kick me in the ass.

I WOULD NOT BE STOPPED!

The shows must go on and I will lead the way! And so I did. This show was wicked fun!

Apoptygma Beserk, Disturbed, Gothminister, Good Charlotte, Korn, Dope,
Sirenia, HIM, The Birthday Massacre, Ministry, Bell Book and Candle, Modulate, Benny Benassi, Theatre des Vampires, The 69 Eyes and a whole lot more fun!

This program aired originally Wednesday, January 02, 2008
Enjoy the download.

The Darkhours - Episode LIII: Holiday madness musical sedative

It’d started, y’know. People were doing the holiday panic. Dashing through the snow...and through crowds of frantic shoppers. It was only the beginning and it only got worse day by day.

That’s where the Darkhours came in. Two hours of funky music and the oddity that is Darkstar to make you either calm yourself or fire up some energy in a time when there’s nothing on TV thats new and you wanted to forget about the hectic world of shopping...or whatever else vexed you.

This night featured great tunes and remixes of bands like:
Apoptygma Beserk, Modulate, Gothminister, Trans Siberian Orchestra, The Birthday Massacre, Voltaire, Depeche Mode, Sirenia and the Cure

We played "You be the producer and YOU name the hook " with artists like: Rob Zombie, AFI, Judas Priest, Robert Palmer, Peter Murphy, Offspring, Moby,

This show was just a whole lotta fun! Enjoy the download!

The Darkhours Episode LII: Black Wednesday

Ok… as the first Darkhours after Thanksgiving, we chose to call it "Black Wednesday". No leftover turkey or crazy sales to stress you out, but quite the opposite. This night we gott to relax from last weeks hectic crap of rushing out for T-Day supplies and then waking up early to start the ridiculous ritual of the madcap 30 day shopping spree for the season. Tonight, we brought to you somethings that’s fresh and fun and full of vigor as we laugh at life’s ironies.

Also, new tunes and artists to the Darkhours as we try to keep it fresh all the time. The Darkhours may celebrate the dead but not the stale.

And last but not least, another round of our new game: "You be the Producer and YOU NAME THE HOOK!"

<itunes:summary>Ok… as the first Darkhours after Thanksgiving, we chose to call it "Black Wednesday".

The Darkhours - Episode LI: The LIVE Thanksgiving show.

This was the only live show for Thanksgiving for the Darkhours. Although it was a week ahead, regretfully there was no live Thanksgiving eve show.. Not that I expect anyone to be around for my sacreligious foul mouthed ass the night before Thanksgiving anyway.

Tonight we got into some sort of holiday spirit and proved that the Darkhours isn’t just some emo anti-everything show… just anti- most things.

This was a very fun show as we manufactured a rather entartaining game that may become a regular staple on the show. We called the game: "YOU be the Producer: Name the hook!" IN this game we examined songs and attempted to catch the "hook" (what we in the industry call the part of a song that makes you want to hear it over and over again... the part that makes the song's popularity in any genre).

You'll be listening and screaming the hooks out just as the chatroom did. This was a really fun game that everyone enjoyed.

The Darkhours - Episode L (That means 50)

Ok...so barring the “mid season filler shows” which probably would have made this the 54th or 55th show, for all intensive purposes, lets call this the 50th milestone episode.

Just what was it?

Euro Dance?
Death Metal?
Dark Wave?
Euro Metal?
Classic Nu Wave?
Will there be dancing gnomes, ghost stories, comedic stylings , rude talk and impressions?

Will it just be just a great show?

Download and step inside the festivities.

The show was fun as usual, there was some weird music and I made a few ears bleed.

We had listeners in the chatroom from:

America
Italy
Canada
Romania
Germany
Egypt
Finland
Netherlands
Sweden

So grab the show and hear me make an ass of myself and catch some hot tunes from outside the USA!

The Darkhours - Episode XXXI: Blue Moon Magus

There was a blue moon out that night...how fitting that the Darkhours should do a completely dark and ethereal show. If you have no idea of what a blue moon is, it's explained at the top of the show.

This one was one of the spooky ones, kids. Lot’s of tunes to invoke the spirits and harness the energies of the blue moon. That tingle you’ll feel in the back of your neck is the Dark Mojo!

Have you ever danced with the Devil in the pale moon light? Do it to this episode of the Darkhours from KMRL!
